Joining people around the nation and world, Dungarvin is celebrating Autism Acceptance Month. Also called Autism Awareness Month or World Autism Month, April is a dedicated time to honor the experiences and identities of people on the autism spectrum.
Dungarvin, a national, family-owned organization that provides person-centered services to people in need of supports, acknowledges that each individual with autism has unique needs, desires and dreams for their lives. Dungarvin is proud to support more than 800 individuals who identify living with autism around the country.
Also known as Autism Spectrum Disorder, this brain-development condition encompasses a wide range of experiences and levels of severity. Some people with autism need no support at all, while others require daily care and professional supports.
While autism manifests in a range of conditions and behaviors, there are ongoing discussions regarding how autism should be considered. For some, it is a condition that needs to be “fixed;” for others, it is an identity that should be celebrated.
“We believe people with autism, no matter where they are on spectrum, deserve opportunities to live a full and complete life in their communities,” said Dungarvin Minnesota State Director Nat Graf.
The organization supports children and adults with autism in different ways, including in their own homes, in traditional, four-person group homes, Day Programs and other support services. “We also have some folks that need more extensive support, so they’re in our Acute Behavioral Services,” Nat said. “We tailor our services for each individual, meeting them where they are and supporting them according to their own needs and choices.”
Dungarvin is excited to bring awareness to the needs, challenges and successes of people with autism by celebrating Autism Acceptance Month.
