In March, Dungarvin, a 50-year-old, national organization providing services to people in need of supports, will join the nation in celebrating Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. The company’s teams and individuals served across the country will proudly wear orange on March 2 to show support and promote community inclusion for people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD).

Orange is the official color of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month because it is a bright symbol of energy and positivity. Beyond Wear Orange Day, Dungarvin plans to participate by shining a light on the diversity, talents, interests and attributes of individuals the organization supports. Dungarvin will share these stories and photos on social media.

Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month began in March 1987, when President Ronald Reagan first declared it a time for “according to our fellow citizens with such disabilities both encouragement and the opportunities they need to lead productive lives and to achieve their full potential.”

Since then, a number of advocacy organizations, especially the National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities, have conducted national campaigns promoting an opportunity when people with and without disabilities can come together to from strong, diverse communities.

Because people with I/DD often face social stigma and system barriers that can prevent them from meaningful engagement in society, a common campaign theme is community inclusion. Not only during Developmental Disabilities Month, but year round, Dungarvin supports individuals to be able to engage in their communities of choice. It is a core aspect of the company’s services and mission to respect and respond to the choices of people in need of supports.
