Dungarvin to Celebrate Black History Month

Activity prompts thought about contributions of Black Americans

February 2, 2026 | Edie Grossfield, Digital Content Specialist

During February, Dungarvin will join the nation to celebrate Black History Month, a dedicated time to highlight the contributions, achievements and legacy of Black people throughout U.S. history.

As we think about the impact Black Americans have had on our country’s history and culture, it’s interesting to note that this special awareness month began in 1915, when thousands of Black Americans traveled from around the country to Chicago to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery.

That year, Harvard-trained historian Carter G. Woodson led an effort to establish what is known today as the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. The group sponsored the first Black history awareness week in 1926, which eventually evolved into Black History Month.

More than 55 percent of Dungarvin’s employees identify as Black or African American. To celebrate this year, Dungarvin is inviting all staff members to share their voices by answering a few questions designed to prompt thoughts and feelings about Black Americans in U.S. history. The organization also shares information and photos on its Intranet and social media pages of staff celebrating Black History Month.

Dungarvin recognizes and appreciates the experience, skills, dedication, hard work and compassion of its Black team members. Dungarvin is proud to shine a spotlight on these important members of our teams across the country during Black History Month.
