Braeden Tyler-Babkirk, an Employment Specialist at Compass Career Solutions in Spokane, Washington, has a knack for finding creative ways to help the individuals he supports connect with their communities. And that’s what led the American Network of Community Options and Resources (ANCOR) to select Braeden for a DSP of the Year Award in the Special Category of Excellence in Innovation.

Braeden, along with six of his fellow DSPs (Direct Support Professionals) from Dungarvin, the parent company of Compass, will be honored this week during the ANCOR Connect ’26 conference in Boston. ANCOR, a national, nonprofit association representing private, community-based disability service providers, chose 57 DSPs out of a record-number 544 nominees from around the country as honorees for this year’s awards.

Dungarvin flew all six of its winners, plus their guests, to Boston for a whirlwind tour of the city, culminating in the ANCOR awards ceremony.

“Winning this award means a great deal to me,” Braeden said of the experience. “I’m genuinely honored to be recognized for doing work that I care so deeply about. Helping someone grow, connect and thrive is its own reward, and this recognition is a great affirmation of that.”

Braeden helps break through barriers individuals often face when they try to participate in their communities, said Compass Program Director Jessica Godoy, who nominated him for the ANCOR award. “He steps in as an advocate, ensuring fair treatment, access to resources and true inclusion in community activities that matter most to each person.”

One individual benefitting from Braeden’s innovative approach is Jason. He was looking for ways to participate in his local community and express himself creatively through his own poetry and music. Braeden helped Jason explore opportunities in his area, which led Jason to find local karaoke and open-mic events. Braeden also supported and encouraged Jason to give these events a try.

“I really enjoy helping people discover opportunities that let them express who they are. Supporting someone the way I support Jason by exploring their interests, encouraging them to try new things and watching their confidence grow is incredibly meaningful to me,” Braeden said. “There’s something special about seeing someone step into their community, connect with others and realize what they’re capable of, and I feel grateful every time I get to be part of that journey.”

Another example of Braeden’s approach is his work with Jeff, an individual who wanted to be more social and make friends but struggled to find an environment where he could feel comfortable around others. Knowing that Jeff loves to play fantasy tabletop and trading card games, Braeden found a local club at a comic book store.

“He supported Jeff in building the confidence to participate in and navigate social interactions with the other players,” Jessica said. “Through this experience, Jeff not only found an inclusive community that shares his interests, he developed communication skills and friendships.”

Braeden said he’s learned a lot from his professional experience. “I’ve learned that growth often happens in small, meaningful steps, and being there to encourage those moments is a privilege.”

Braeden’s colleagues at Compass Career Solutions and Dungarvin are incredibly proud of him and the ways he lives our mission to respect and respond to the choices of people in need of supports. Congratulations on this tremendous honor, Braeden!
