ACI-Dungarvin Family Foster Care parents in North Carolina provide safe and loving homes for children coming from a variety of difficult situations, sometimes even neglect or abuse. One of the most important roles foster parents play for these children is advocate, including for their safety, education and health care.
One of ACI-Dungarvin’s most dedicated foster parents is Kim Robinson, who has taken incredible care of an 8-year-old girl who has cystic fibrosis. Kim initially fostered the girl and later adopted her.
Last year, during Cystic Fibrosis Day at the Duke University Children’s Hospital in Durham, Kim joined a panel to talk about her experience caring for a child with this diagnosis. She spoke thoughtfully about educating herself on the disease and how to care for her daughter, as well as the importance of collaborating with the Duke medical team to help her stay healthy.
“It was an honor to be part of such an important day, and I believe my input was needed so that other parents could see that having a child with cystic fibrosis is not something to be afraid of or believe you cannot do,” Kim said.
After sharing her experience with the panel, the Duke Cystic Fibrosis Department asked Kim to be a liaison between the department and parents to help others navigate through the process of raising a child with the disease. She accepted the position and is very excited to start working with the team at Duke next year.
ACI-Dungarvin is incredibly proud to have passionate individuals like Kim as part of its Foster Care team.
