Our History

A Vision to Make a Difference

Dungarvin began when Tim and Diane Madden purchased a St. Paul property to support people with developmental disabilities. Their mission helped lead Minnesota’s movement from institutions to community living. Over the last 50 years, Dungarvin has grown in response to the continuing need for support of the people they serve. Today, Dungarvin is recognized as a leader in structuring creative and flexible ways to further enhance the lives of persons served.

Founded in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1976

After working as Direct Support Professionals, Tim and Diane saw Minnesota’s urgent need for community-based services. Drawing on youthful energy and optimism, they launch Dungarvin to answer the call, retrofitting an apartment to serve 15 people.

The name honors an act of kindness Tim experienced in Ireland — symbolizing compassion at the heart of Dungarvin.

Early Growth

Dungarvin now supports 57 people in six homes. The Maddens acquire Reaney Heights, serving 100 individuals, with a bold plan: close the large facility and transition residents to smaller homes for better community integration — a goal they achieve over time.

Medicaid Waivers Change the Game

As Minnesota moves people from institutions to communities, Dungarvin partners with counties and agencies to pioneer new service models statewide. Dungarvin launches Minnesota’s first Medicaid-waivered program, enabling flexible, individualized services outside institutions.

Go Southeast Young Company

Dungarvin expands to Indiana, winning a contract to open community-based programs as the state follows Minnesota’s progressive approach.

The Go-Go ‘90s

Rapid growth defines the decade: from five states in 1990 to 11 by 1999. New services — foster care, children’s programs, family support—position Dungarvin as a provider of choice.

The Dungarvin Way

To unify operations across states, Dungarvin introduces “The Dungarvin Way,” standardizing best practices and compliance. A National Central Office and leadership training programs strengthen quality and consistency.

A New Millennium of Opportunity

Dungarvin launches Host Home services, offering individuals more autonomy through family-based living arrangements — an innovative alternative to group homes.

Technology for Independence

Dungarvin creates Sengistix LLC, introducing sensor and remote monitoring technology to help individuals live safely with greater independence.

Another Era of Growth

Celebrating 40 years, Dungarvin grows through acquisitions in North Carolina and Indiana, adding nearly 1,000 employees. The mission evolves: Respecting and Responding to the Choices of People in Need of Supports.

Sustained Excellence

Dungarvin expands through acquisitions in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and California, doubling its workforce to 10,000 and continuing its commitment to quality, choice, and respect.
