During the month of February, Dungarvin acknowledges Black History Month as a time to celebrate the contributions and achievements of African Americans throughout history. It’s an opportunity for all of us to honor the resilience, strength and cultural impact of black individuals and communities. At Dungarvin, more than 53 percent of our staff identify as African American, and we are deeply committed to promoting inclusion, equity and diversity in our communities across the United States. This month can serve as a reminder of the importance of advocating for equal rights and representation for all, regardless of race or ability.
The colors, as seen in visual, have significant meaning. Black represents resilience; Red for the blood shed throughout history; Yellow symbolizes optimism and justice; and lastly Green embodies the rich greenery of Africa’s nature and lush landscape. At Dungarvin, we value each individual’s inherent dignity and worth. The color of one’s skin or physical abilities does not diminish one’s value as a human being.
This month, we reflect on the struggles faced for equality and while we acknowledge that progress has been made, we know so much more work still needs to be done to create a more equitable society. Let’s continue to educate ourselves and promote inclusivity while we, together, and celebrate the richness of black culture and heritage.
Over the course of the next four weeks, we will proudly share Dungarvin’s own voices and experiences on this subject as we support and uplift one another. We look forward to celebrating the legacy, empowerment and achievements of black individuals all month long. Stay tuned for our many social media posts to come!
For over 30 years, Victoria and James have shared a love story that defies conventions. They are currently supported at a Dungarvin residence in Shepherdsville, Kentucky (near Louisville).
Victoria and James met in their early adult years and have been in a loving relationship ever since. Though they lived separately for all of their lives, their bond never wavered. Victoria, who had been with a Family Home Provider (FHP) for several years, found stability in that environment. There was just one thing missing…James.
James, on the other hand, lived independently in an apartment supported by a different provider. Despite their separate living arrangements, they made their relationship work, with the full support of James’ sister, who serves as their guardian, and the Case Manager who has worked with them for the last eight years.
Two years ago, James proposed to Victoria and the couple began dreaming of a life together as husband and wife. They envisioned a wedding on Valentine’s Day 2025, symbolic of the love they had nurtured for more than three decades. They dreamed of living together in a home where they could share their lives while maintaining some independence with separate bedrooms, a setup that best suited their unique needs.
Their dream seemed unattainable until their Case Manager and guardian began advocating for them. When the Dungarvin Louisville Team heard about the couple’s story, the organization stepped in to explore ways to better support them. After months of effort, Dungarvin identified a staffed residence with two available rooms. However, the home required ADA modifications to accommodate James’s needs, including an accessible bathroom as well as widening the doors in both bedrooms.
With the support and approval of Dungarvin Kentucky leaders, modifications were made to the home and Victoria and James finally moved into their new home a few months ago. They were thrilled to see their rooms decorated in their favorite colors — James’ in dark blue and Victoria’s in pink. For the first time in their lives, they were able to live together as a couple, creating a home filled with love, laughter, and shared moments.
Living together has brought a new level of joy to Victoria and James. Victoria loves helping prepare dinner and the couple enjoys weekly date nights, from movies to dinners or simply riding around town. They are grateful for the opportunity to finally live together and feel more connected than ever.
However, their dream of a Valentine’s Day wedding recently hit a heartbreaking roadblock. Due to financial regulations, getting married would result in a loss of over $100 per month for each of their benefits — a significant decrease for the couple already living on a fixed income. It was a devastating realization for a couple who have waited so long to make their union official.
Despite this setback, Victoria and James remain determined to celebrate their love. With the support of their guardian, Case Manager, and staff, they have decided to hold a wedding and reception without legally formalizing their marriage to avoid financial penalties. They remain focused to make their Valentine’s Day wedding as memorable as ever!
Unfortunately, their financial situation presents another challenge. The couple used much of their savings to purchase personal items and necessities for their new home, leaving little to invest in a wedding. Victoria dreams of the perfect dress and decorations, while James quietly hopes to give his fiancée the wedding she deserves.
This is where their community has stepped up, again. James and Victoria’s story is one of hope, love, and resilience. The couple’s Case Manager started a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for their wedding and reception, but the couple are hopeful for support from the community who may be moved by their story.
Victoria and James have only ever wanted a life together that reflects their love and commitment, and a wedding filled with joy, laughter, and the start of their next chapter together. Their story proves that love truly conquers all!

How long have you worked at Dungarvin; in the IDD industry?
I have worked for Dungarvin since 2018, I was first hired as a DSP but became a Program Coordinator within two months of being hired.
Why do you have a passion for this work?
I love working in this field because of how much we get to help these individuals live their authentic lives. To be able to see the smiles and the happiness on the individuals’ faces who we are helping makes my heart happy knowing that we are helping them live the lives they deserve.
What would you most like to see happen in your state to better serve people with disabilities?
To better serve people with disabilities in my state requires more education enabling individuals to be more independent and to live their best lives. My Eugene team has gone above and beyond making sure that our clients are getting the best care possible while learning new life skills.

Who are your heroes in life and why?
My father. He has always been my number one supporter. He has pushed me to be who I am today and to take my work ethic seriously. Coming from a military background, my father has made me a stronger and more driven individual. I couldn’t thank him enough for always being there and supporting me.
What do you most value about the Dungarvin team with whom you work?
That each one of my Dungarvn colleagues works with integrity, compassion, and dedication. They are passionate about the team and the work that they do. The Eugene office is run by mostly women, and I love seeing women support women. I am grateful that I get to be a part of this team on a daily basis and experience the family that they have created here.

Anna Hegland, Minnesota Senior Director, was honored and touched as family, friends and colleagues came together to celebrate her 15 years with the organization last night in Mendota Heights, Minnesota. Tears were shed and laughter ringed throughout the room as we demonstrated our appreciation for her immense contributions to the Dungarvin organization.
The evening was a moving tribute filled with cherished memories of Anna and the relationships she’s forged as a hands-on leader and mentor. Senior Directors Jen Elleraas and Karen Hammond, Director of Acute Behavioral Services Heather Golden, Chief Risk Officer Paul Smith, as well as Karin Stockwell, Central Regional Director, were among the many who gave speeches that showed their deep and heartfelt appreciation for Anna. The Minnesota Operations team even put together a presentation that had the whole room smiling – leaving others in sentimental tears. “You are about our persons served and you are about our mission,” said Karen Hammond.

There were some heartwarming surprises as well! Both direct care staff and persons supported sent in videos sharing their appreciation for Anna. One of the persons supported (pictured below) has been at the Dungarvin Hiawatha home for 24 years and still talks about Anna all the time.

“I’ve been so fortunate to have had such an amazing work family over the last fifteen years,” shared Anna. “I’ve been surrounded by intelligent, compassionate and creative people who have all helped me learn and grow. I truly appreciate the experiences and the opportunities Dungarvin has given me over the years.” One of these opportunities is her role leading the ARRM advocacy organization as president. Anna took on this additional responsibility in June of 2024. ARRM’s mission is to advocate for, inform and support Minnesota organizations serving people in the disability and mental health communities.

Anna, thank you for your 15 years of dedication to Dungarvin and this industry. You’re an advocate for others and a thoughtful leader. Dungarvin is so thankful for you!

1. How long have you worked at Dungarvin; in the IDD industry?
I started with Dungarvin in June 2023. I have worked in New Mexico and Oregon with Dungarvin. My first job in this industry was in the early 2000’s when I was an “attendant,” that’s what they called DSPs back then.
2. Why do you have a passion for this work?
I love working in this field because of how much help and support we provide individuals. To truly help someone become independent and help them live on their own is amazing. These people only want to feel like they matter and have a voice, and we give them that. I am a Program Coordinator for Supported Living, and I absolutely love my job.
3. What is your most treasured possession?
My family and my grandkids! I have four grandkids that I adore, three boys and one girl.
4. What do you value most in a friend or coworker?
Loving this PC (Program Coordinator) life. I love when my coworkers have the same love as I do for this job.
5. What do you most value about the Dungarvin team with whom you work?
Portland Oregon Supported Living Team is the best team I’ve worked with. We are like a well-oiled machine, working together to help people live their best lives! If ever there is any trouble we divide and conquer to find a solution that works!
The foundation of Dungarvin’s work as a social services agency is to provide support to individuals in our care, no matter the level of attention or supports an individual may need.
Today, we invite you to walk through a “Day in the Life” of a Mental Health Specialist, and more specifically, see a special friendship shared between staff and a person supported. Take a moment to learn why Mental Health Specialist roles at Dungarvin are so critical to the population we serve.
