MISSION and PHILOSOPHY 

At Dungarvin California we are committed to our mission of "Respecting and Responding to the Choices of People with Developmental Disabilities".  Because each individual we support is unique, we strive to provide services that are tailored to each person's own hopes, dreams, goals and needs. 

SERVICES

In 1997, Dungarvin established services in California with the opening of two day programs in Sonoma and Solano Counties in the cities of Santa Rosa and Vacaville.  Our third program in the city of Hayward began services in June 2003.  All three programs offer a combination of community integration, base site programming and employment opportunities.  In addition, our staff are skilled at meeting the needs of individuals with medical frailties. Currently, staff at these two programs work with individuals having a wide range of physical disabilities including visual, speech, hearing and mobility impairments.  In addition, services are provided to those who require assistance with tube feeding and hydration, monitoring of oxygen equipment, diabetic support, personal hygiene care, range of motion and assistance with eating.

Santa Rosa Day Program -This Program is licensed to provide programming and transportation services to 60 individuals.  Our license enables us to serve up to 25 individuals who require the use of a wheel chair at this location.  This facility is 3,900 square feet and offers:

  • Two large all purpose rooms

  • Two kitchen areas

  • Sensory Stimulation Room

  • Space for Adapted Physical Education programming

  • Music and Creative Arts programming 

  • Repositioning lounges

  • Two changing rooms with hydraulic lift tables

  • Four handicap accessible vans with wheel chair lifts utilized for providing transportation to and from our facility and enabling individuals access to the community on a regular basis.

A separate suite adjacent to the Santa Rosa day program serves as our central office.  This space includes offices for support staff, day services program director and senior director as well as conference areas.

Vacaville Day Program – This program is licensed to provide programming and transportation services to 45 individuals.  Our license enables us to serve up to 20 individuals who require the use of a wheel chair at this location.  This facility is currently 3500 square feet.  The facility offers: 

  • Three large all purpose rooms

  • Twp kitchen areas

  • Sensory Stimulation Room

  • Work Out Room

  • Computers with touch screen monitors equipped with video cameras, various adaptive devices and internet access

  • Music and Creative Arts programming

  • Repositioning room

  • Two changing rooms with hydraulic lift tables

  • Three handicap accessible vans with wheel chair lifts utilized for providing transportation to and from our facility and enabling individuals access to the community on a regular basis.

Hayward Day Program –  This program is licensed to provide programming and transportation services to 45 adults.  Our license enables us to serve up to 20 individuals who require the use of a wheelchair at this location.  This program has a 3,100 square foot facility in Hayward.  The facility offers:

  • Two large all purpose rooms

  • Kitchen area

  • Sensory Stimulation Room

  • Repositioning Lounge and Adaptive PE Area

  • Computers equipped with touch screen monitors, video cameras, various adaptive devices as well as educational & recreational software

  • Music and Creative Arts programming

  • Changing room with a hydraulic lift table

  • Three handicap accessible vans with wheel chair lifts utilized for providing transportation to and from our facility and enabling individuals access to the community on a regular basis.

PROGRAMMING AND SUPPORTS

Dungarvin California works closely with the individuals we serve to insure that a meaningful programming experience which fully recognizes each persons strengths, preferences and interests is developed and maintained over the course of one’s attendance in our program.  We have been highly rated by Regional Centers and Licensing evaluators for our individualized approach to developing services which allow all individuals to participate in activities and programs which are beneficial to their long term growth and of individual interest to them.  Following is a list of many of the areas that we have or are able to focus on as we develop a service plan.  This list is always growing as we develop new programming ideas to further enhance our offerings.

COMMUNITY INTEGRATION 

  • Citizenship:  current events, customer eduction, civil and legal rights, and voting.

  • Recognition of rights and responsibilities as a member of the community.

  • Use of neighborhood resources, (e.g., superette, church, park, post office, banking, and library.)

  • Safety skills.

  • Street crossing/traffic.

  • Use of public transportation.

  • Use of community resources.

  • Socializing and recreation.

  • Membership in clubs and social volunteer organizations use of community resources, socialization and recreation.

  • Membership in clubs and social and volunteer organizations.

  • Emergency contracts, including, but not limited to: police, fire, hospitals, social services, advocacy services, etc. 

  • Use of telephone and phone books.

  • Development of social and support networks within the community, if beneficial.

  • Volunteering (hospitals, women shelters, florist, daycare, animal shelter, churches, nursing homes, schools, recycling/environmental centers, etc.)

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

  • Developing listening skills.

  • Increasing expressive language skills.

  • Identifying, securing and educating the individual in alternate systems of communication if needed, such as sign language, picture boards, facilitated communication, communication technology, etc.

  • Developing present verbal communication skills to an understandable level.

  • Developing effective means of seeking assistance when needed.

  • Developing verbal or alternative communication skills to effectively express feelings and emotions.

  • Developing techniques to increase assertiveness and self-sufficiency in expressing wants and needs.

DECISION MAKING/PROBLEM SOLVING SKILLS

  • Providing regular information and reminders to facilitate the person’s awareness and understanding of the numerous options available in his or her daily life, including relationships, structure of home, daily routines, etc.

  • Developing ability to make decisions when faced with options.

  • Developing ability to recognize and/or determine choices.

  • Developing skills and abilities to recognize and identify problems affecting the person.

  • Developing skills to sort through the various aspects of the situation, and identifying changes that need to be made.

  • Developing skills to explore various solutions/decisions that may resolve a problem affecting their life.

  • Developing coping skills to deal with problems or the consequences to decisions made.

  • Encouraging involvement and understanding to promote active participation in their living situation and program.

SOCIALIZATION SKILLS

  • Making friends and establishing acquaintances.

  • Development of appropriate eating skills and manners.

  • Increasing age appropriate interaction with peers.

  • Appropriate expression of negative emotions.

  • Increasing age-appropriate and acceptable behavior in public and private.

  • Encouraging assertiveness.

  • Developing recognition of the needs, rights, and responsibilities of self and others.

  • Developing recognition of rights and responsibilities of his or her sexuality and appropriate ways of expressing it.

  • Developing the person’s ability to recognize the need for and the use of personal support systems, appropriate relationships, and use of community resources.

  • Advancement of skills in identifying and effectively dealing with emotions.

LEISURE/RECREATION SKILLS

  • Developing skills in leisure activities, including constructive use of free time, individual activity planning, cooperative game playing, and using judgment regarding TV.

  • Development of group interaction skills.

  • Increasing awareness and repertoire of choices that may be pursued.

  • Increasing use of community resources available to the person.

  • Developing age-appropriate behavior related to activity at home and in public.

  • Developing skills to aid in relaxation.

  • Developing skills in identifying, planning, and following through with leisure activities.

  • Identification of appropriate social and recreational resources available advancement of skills in identifying, planning and following through with personal leisure and recreational interest.

MOBILITY

  • Assuring physical adaptations coincide with any alterations in mobility.

  • Training in use of adaptive equipment and aids.

  • Providing a barrier-free living environment.

  • Locating, assisting, and training in use of community resources.

  • Coordinating physical/occupational therapy evaluation and implementing recommendations of therapist(s), as needed.

  • Assuring all staff are trained in proper transfer techniques and other physical assistance/cares.

  • Coordinating with appropriate health care providers to assure identification and treatment of any complications, training the individual in self-identification, reporting and treatment, as appropriate.

SELF-CARE SKILLS 

  • Developing grooming skills and routines.

  • Developing personal hygiene/health care skills.

  • Learning about basis nutrition and encouraging positive eating habits.

  • Developing dressing skills, (i.e., choosing appropriate clothing and wearing clean clothing.)

  • Improving toilet skills.

  • Developing laundry skills, (i.e. identifying when to wash clothing, bedding, etc., sorting clothing, use of washer and dryer, return of clean clothing to drawers and closet.)

DAILY LIVING/DOMESTIC SKILLS 

  • Improving skills in establishing routines for upkeep of their environment.

  • Developing the respect for personal property (their own and others).

  • Developing functional cleaning and cooking skills.

  • Developing skill in domestic areas (e.g. vacuuming, dusting, and cleaning up after his or her self.)

  • Developing environmental safety skills.

  • Promoting the development of the person’s self concept as a cooperating contributing member of the day program and community.

MEDICAL/HEALTH CARE

  • Recognizing and identifying symptoms of various illnesses or previously existing medical problems.

  • Training in the use of any adaptive equipment being used to benefit the person in their mobility or daily functions.

  • Training in regards to scheduling and attending necessary medical appointments scheduled with outside services.

  • Recognizing and identifying the need to secure professional nursing of other heath care services.

MONEY MANAGEMENT

  • Devising a system of money management conducive to the individual’s situation, skills, and needs.

  • Understanding the importance of bill paying and budgeting.

  • Maintaining a record keeping system, if appropriate.

  • Use of banking services, maintaining savings and/or checking account.

  • Developing responsible spending and purchasing habits.

VOCATIONAL STABILITY

  • Recognizing vocational strengths and weaknesses.

  • Assist the individuals in identifying work options and pursuing the employment search

  • Developing positive team relationships with supervisors, co-workers, etc.

  • Identification of job-related problems and independence in solving such problems. 

  • Recognizing job duties.
